“This is dumb as hell,” Lee had said when he’d joined Dom on the couch the night after she finished signing the contract and was watching old episodes for research. “What would possess someone to join this show?”

“That’s what I’m going to find out,” she had replied.

“Wait, so none of you answered the question,” Ariana said. “What are you guys going to do when you meet Prince Charming?”

“Still going with the firm handshake,” Lauren said. “I mean, the producers want me to say all kinds of weird shit. But I would never say any of it in real life. And if the point of this whole thing is to get to know somebody and possibly fall in love with them, then maybe I shouldn’t pretend to be a weirdo with shitty pick-up line.”

Ariana laughed. There was something to be said about brutal honesty. But maybe full-on brutal honesty would not be a good plan.

“I mean, I’ll probably also just say hi?” she mused. “The big gestures aren’t really my thing.”

“Apparently the big and over-the-top gestures are the ones that are most memorable,” Dominique said. “But the question is, whether they’re remembered well or not.”

“I guess it depends on what kind of impression you want to go for,” Lauren said.

“The one where I don’t look like an idiot on national television,” Clover responded.

Ariana couldn’t keep her giggling contained. “Does anyone come on this show with the intention of getting publicly humiliated on national television?”

“Hey, listen, I’m not judging anyone’s kinks,” Clover said. “But that one’s not really on my list.”

Their carriage moved up a few feet and paused again. They could hear the producers directing different girls, could hear the endless calls of “And, action!” and names shouted, followed by an increasingly annoyed producer asking them to “Redo that from the top!”

“Do you really think anyone’s going to do anything over-the-top?” Ariana wondered.

“How over-the-top are we talking about?” Clover asked. “Are we talking about rappelling from a helicopter? Dressing up like a unicorn? Walking out naked? How extreme?”

Dominique snickered. “I really hope none of those are things that happen.”

“If they are,” Lauren said, “we really are going to be in this carriage forever.”

“Definitely past it’s pumpkin expiration date,” Ariana said, because she couldn’t help herself.

The carriage moved forward again, and a pair of heels marched up to the door. “This group next,” a voice called.

The four women exchanged slightly worried looks.

“Well, this is it,” Lauren said.

“See you on the other side?” Ariana asked.

“Hell yes,” Dominique said. “We gotta stick together in there. Power in numbers and all.”

“You know it,” Clover agreed.

Another knock came. “Ariana, your entrance is first.”

“Good luck,” Dominique said.

Ariana swallowed hard. “I can use all the luck I can get.”
